Energy Efficent Lighting Used in new Shopping Center
Edens & Avant announces today the June 30th re-opening of its Port Plaza in Port Jefferson Station, Long Island, N.Y. Philips Energy Efficient Lighting
DOE and two federal agencies have implemented Gateway demonstration project in Washington D.C. to provide a brighter and energy efficient lighting for a federal government parking deck. The Gateway project evaluates high-performance LED lighting to improve illumination with reduced energy consumption.

The Department of Energy, Department of Labor and Philips have joined together to install VizorLED fixture in a parking structure below the DOL’s Frances Perkins building at 200 Constitution Avenue.
VizorLED minimizes glare, improves lighting uniformity, and provides a comfortable environment for people to park and walk through.
According to a release, 100 watt high-pressure sodium lamps are replaced with VizorLED units. The rated life of VizorLED unit is seven years and it has a potential life of 18 years due to the proprietary thermal management incorporated in its construction.
These devices consume only half the energy consumed by the sodium lamps used earlier. Additional energy saving is possible due to the Proximo occupancy detectors used. The unoccupied space is detected and the LEDs are dimmed. Philips claims that this is capable of providing an additional energy saving of 25 percent. Hence the total energy saving can be 75 percent.
John Campsmith, general manager, Philips Wide-Lite stated that VizorLED solution provides attractive lighting in addition to energy saving. According to Roland Risser, Building Technologies program manager at DOE, their guidance to government-industry collaborations will continue towards implementing high performance LED products.

The General Services Administration is overhauling how it lights federal offices — one cubicle at a time.
By replacing row upon row of fluorescent lights with controllable task lights above each workstation, GSA estimates it can cut lighting-based energy consumption by 40 percent or more.
"It's a simple concept really. We need to put light when and where it is needed," said Kevin Powell, director of research for GSA's Public Buildings Service.
"That's actually not what we've been up to. What we've been doing has been flooding our spaces with tons of light, which ironically puts too much light in places where we don't want it, like on your computer screens."

The amount of light flooding both federal and commercial office spaces has mushroomed since the advent of the cheap fluorescent tube during World War II, said Kevin Kampschroer, director of GSA's Office of High-Performing Green Buildings.
During his many public speaking engagements, Kampschroer often cites an eye-opening statistic that he attributes to a Harvard University professor. The amount of artificial light in office buildings has increased 400 percent since 1900, even though our eyes haven't gotten 400 percent worse.
GSA has been at the vanguard of installing more energy-efficient lighting systems in its buildings and avoiding electric lights altogether where possible by maximizing the use of natural light from windows or overhead skylights.
Now GSA is taking the effort a step further by moving away from the traditional approach of installing rows of overhead lights in ceilings, regardless of where employees are located, and instead targeting lights to individual workstations.
GSA is using part of the $5.5 billion in Recovery Act funds it received to install lighting systems using this new approach in about 100 existing buildings, Kampschroer said. In addition, GSA has incorporated the lighting design into performance requirements for new buildings.
The potential to save energy through the new lighting installations is high. Lighting accounts for about one-fourth of all electricity consumed in office buildings, according to the Energy Department.
GSA tested the new lighting approach last year on one floor of the Philip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco. Flanks of overhead lights were removed and replaced with 86 lighting systems suspended directly above each cubicle. The lighting systems are composed of three 32-watt florescent tubes: two that emit downward light toward the employee's workstation, and one that projects ambient lighting toward the ceiling.
Occupancy sensors allow the lights to be turned on and off automatically when an employee enters a cubicle or leaves after an extended period of time. In addition, the intensity of the lights can be increased or decreased to suit specific employees' needs. Most employees have opted to use about 60 percent of the maximum power available in the lights, said Mark Levi, energy program manager at GSA's Region 9, headquartered in San Francisco.
Employees who had the new lights installed found the lights more comfortable overall than those who had the older lighting configuration. The cubicle-specific lights were more evenly distributed and provided less glare on computer screens than the traditional overhead lights, employees said.
By studying how often the lights remained on during the workday, GSA discovered that employees occupied their cubicles for only 55 percent of the day on average. Twenty-two of the workstations were occupied for less than three hours on at least half of the 32 days studied.
The lighting system installed at the Burton building capitalizes on those frequent absences by keeping the lights off when employees are away from their desks. The result was a 40 percent reduction in energy consumed by the new lights, compared with the already efficient lighting systems installed in most federal offices, according to a study completed last month by GSA and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
"The simplest way to save energy is in fact to turn the lights off," Powell said.

Louvre Lit with LED Energy Efficient Lighting
The Louvre Museum will undergo a renovation project featuring Toshiba LED lighting, according to a new partnership agreement between the two entities.
Toshiba Corporation announced that it has entered a partnership agreement with the Louvre Museum to help with its lighting renovation project. Under the agreement, Toshiba will support lighting renovations in some of the museum’s most visited public spaces with provision of state-of-the art Toshiba LED lighting and renovation costs. Toshiba will provide LED lamp equipment and the cost of renovation for the Pyramids, the Napoléon Court, and the Cour carrée.
All told, there are a total of some 4,500 Toshiba LED light fittings planned. This partnership term will last from June 30, 2010 to December 31, 2023.

Toshiba Corporation announced that it has entered a partnership agreement with the Louvre Museum to help with its lighting renovation project. Under the agreement, Toshiba will support lighting renovations in some of the museum’s most visited public spaces with provision of state-of-the art Toshiba LED lighting and renovation costs. Toshiba will provide LED lamp equipment and the cost of renovation for the Pyramids, the Napoléon Court, and the Cour carrée.
All told, there are a total of some 4,500 Toshiba LED light fittings planned. This partnership term will last from June 30, 2010 to December 31, 2023.

As one of the world’s most popular museums, the Louvre is aware of the need to replace energy-consuming xenon lighting with an environmentally-friendly solution. The company believes it can deliver this, and will use its energy-saving low-CO2 products to illuminate some of the Louvre’s most familiar spaces: Under its partnership agreement, Toshiba LEDs will illuminate the Pyramids that greets visitors as they approach the museum, the Napoléon Court, and the Cour carrée, the main entrance to the museum.
Renovation and installation of the Napoléon Court and the Pyramid will be completed within 2011, and the Cour carrée is expected to be renovated within 2012.
Alongside environmental concerns, the Louvre's lighting must convey the intrinsic beauty of the museum and its spirit as the home to some of the world’s greatest art. Toshiba says that it recognises that lighting is much more than a means to brighten public spaces, and that Toshiba LEDs can do much more than contribute to saving energy.
Toshiba is taking its new lighting system business to a global level, with initial promotions in such regions as France, Germany, and the UK. Toshiba LED lamps have been available at retailers in France since January 2010. By further promoting its business, Toshiba aims 350 billion sales in FY2015.

Energy Efficient Lighting Added to Courthouse
ANITOWOC — Something other than fireworks will light the skies above Manitowoc this weekend — the lights of the Manitowoc County Courthouse will shine for the first time since roof renovations on the building began a year ago.
Public Works Director Jeff Beyer said energy-efficient lights designed to accentuate the historic building's features have replaced high-wattage floodlights. On Friday, the county again will light the building from dusk until 3 a.m.
"It's a focal point of downtown (Manitowoc) and we want to enhance that," Beyer said. "It's pretty spectacular."
The county stopped lighting the courthouse in the 1950s, but Beyer said residents requested it start again in 1992.
Public Works has allocated money in its budget to light the courthouse, at a cost of $1 a day. Beyer said the energy-efficient lights will cost as muchas or less than the floodlights.
